artmedal.com
This website is noncommercial- but its subject are art medals, which are in some connection with former sponsors or orderers from banking, commerce, economy and industry. The massproduction of medals in the present time is excluded of course. The medals shown here, often deal with some special performance or achivement of an individual, a company, an association or a society. So it is near at hand to include medals sponsored by universities or universities of applied sciences too. These medals are awarded mostly for outstanding results or achievements and are more or less in some relationsship to the economy and standard of living (culture included) in a wide sense- as the universities themselves-at least we hope they are .
You will see some medals originating from the last 120 years, some medals closely connected with the industrial history. It will be evident, that in former times the sponsoring of medals (art medals) was not a rare affair. The aim of this website is to inform about the subject of art medals and to encourage the institutions specified above to sponsor the creation of art medals.
The universities and universities of applied sciences could make evident in this way , that they want to promote and encourage extraordinary achievements or performances, even when they are not able to award a monetary prize. On the other hand they could create to some extend a special relationship between the university and the person, who was being awarded the art medal. This could be of some importance when building up an alumni society or keeping it alive.

citation from Mark
Jones ( former president of the FIDEM- Federation Internationale de la medaille)
on the occasion of the FIDEM - Congress 2000 in Weimar
:
"Nobody needs a medal . Nobody needs art or music
or myth. Nobody needs the stones on a beach or birdsong. It is the useless things
that make life worthwile. The act of commissioning a medal is a challengig
one. It implies an intention to mark significance and make meaning through human
talent ; it is an act of faith in the future and of community with those that
will enjoy the outcome. Why not try it for yourself ?"
